Gabriel Jesus On Fire As Arsenal Secure Semi Final Spot
The visitors got off to a flying start in the Carabao Cup quarter-final, as Jean-Philippe Mateta put them ahead within the opening five minutes.
Jakub Kiwior misjudged the bounce from a long-ball and the French striker was too strong and powered away before slotting the ball past David Raya.
Mikel Arteta’s side failed to create many chances despite having the majority of the ball and Palace looked comfortable for large parts of the half.
However, the Gunners did come close on a few occasions, as Leandro Trossard wasted a good opportunity after some tricky work by Raheem Sterling.
Sterling had a chance himself towards the end of the opening half, as his free-kick forced a miraculous save from Dean Henderson.
Arsenal made an electric start to the second half and almost found an equaliser within five minutes but Sterling failed to find the finish after a superb delivery from Kieran Tierney.
However, just moments later the Gunners did find the crucial leveller through Gabriel Jesus, who delicately chipped the ball over Henderson.
Mikel Arteta decided to spark some life into the match by bringing on Bukayo Saka, who was a breath of fresh air for the Gunners.
Arsenal’s pressure was rewarded moments after Saka’s introduction, as Jesus scored his second of the match and put the hosts ahead.
The Brazilian was not done there, as he clinched his first hat-trick in an Arsenal shirt to put the Gunners 3-1 ahead in the Carabao Cup quarter final.
Despite this appearing to the nail in the coffin, Crystal Palace were not giving up and Eddie Nketiah found the back of the net against his former side to half the deficit.
The hosts managed to hold on to their lead and earned a spot in Carabao Cup semi final – being one of the favourites to win the competition on UK betting sites.
