If you know me, you know I love 2-strokes. I love the sound, the smell, and just the sight of a well-made expansion chamber. Every category of 2-stroke engines has a place in my heart, from 49-500cc, except for the 2-stroke featured in this video because, well, I had never seen a legitimate 600cc 2-stroke dirt bike before.
Can we all just pause for a minute and look at that expansion chamber? What a work of art.
Go to almost any YouTube video featuring an old-school 500cc 2-stroke dirt bike, and you'll find comments from folks who want to know how a "modern" version would do against today's 450 class. More recently, on the other side of the fence, people want to know how a Stark Varg would do against the biggest bikes in the Supercross game.
Basically, everyone seems to want to know what could take down a factory 450 motocross bike.
Well, 999lazer's YouTube channel has always been a wealth of off-road fun and, more recently, a place to watch your dream showdowns and shootouts. There's enough 500cc 2-stroke content to satisfy a die-hard fan like me, but now the team has upped the ante.
The team built a custom 600cc 2-stroke, which we've yet to see hit the track. But in what must be a first, we get to see how a bike like this fairs on the dyno against a Stark Vark Alpha—the most powerful version—and a GasGas MC 450F, which Jorge Prado won the MXGP on last year. The results are mental, so check them out below.
OK, hopefully, you've watched the video, and this won't spoil anything, but what a shocker it was to see the Stark Varg put out just 60 hp. Of course, it's all relative and fair because all bikes were tested on the same machine on the same day.
But here's a question for you: In the most skilled hands you can think of, which of the three bikes featured in this video would do the fastest lap around, say, Glen Helen? Let us know.
