The wastewater treatment facility serving Asheville, North Carolina, and Buncombe County is now back on utility power and fully operational after weathering the recent storm. Despite processing three times the normal amount of water, the plant has been able to maintain its operations.

General Manager Tom Hardy of the Metropolitan Sewage District confirmed that the plant has been treating water continuously throughout the storm. Initially relying on backup generators post-storm, the facility has successfully transitioned back to utility power.

Typically processing 20 million gallons per day, the plant saw a surge to 80 million gallons daily for several days. Hardy assured that all major lines, known as interceptors, are functioning properly. Additionally, all 40 pump stations are back online, with some running on backup power and receiving fuel for their generators.

While repairs are necessary for certain electrical panels, crews are actively assessing the 1,100 miles of sewer lines in the region for any damages. Despite this, residents are encouraged to use the sewer system without hesitation.

Hardy emphasized that individuals can continue to flush and utilize the sewers as needed. He advised residents to inspect their plumbing lines for any damage caused by fallen trees or other storm-related issues. However, the overall sewer system is operational and ready for use.
