'Waste of money!' — Manchester United fans take issue with new Harry Kane report

Manchester United are looking for a new manager, with Erik ten Hag and Mauricio Pochettino the front runners, but once they have decided on who will be in the dugout for next season, the club will move to address a number of issues in the transfer market. And there are a lot of positions that need to be addressed.

The Athletic are reporting that United will look to sign two midfielders in the summer alongside a right-winger and a striker. The report also states that Jorge Mendes has reportedly approached Tottenham Hotspur about potential replacements for Harry Kane, as the striker has emerged as a potential target for the Manchester club.

At 28, Kane is one of the top players in his position, but a lack of trophies have been a blot on his copybook for some time and most likely influenced his desire to go to Manchester City last summer — which Spurs blocked. But with reports earlier in the year stating that United wanted a younger striker to replace the outgoing Edinson Cavani, it seems strange to go for a striker who is less than two years from 30.

While Kane for City would have likely been the final piece in the puzzle, for United to sign him at the start of a rebuild seems like a strange choice, although he has an existing relationship with Pochettino from their time at Tottenham together.

As always, there's the question of the price tag; Spurs rejected more than £100m from City for Kane last summer and given Daniel Levy's tough reputation for negotiations it is unlikely that the price would drop significantly. Given that there have already been rumours that West Ham have slapped a £150m price tag on Declan Rice, it would be an expensive and likely budget hindering transfer for United.

And the fans seem to have all these worries in mind when they were responding to the news that Kane was in the frame for United. The comments below are selected from Twitter:
