Washington State University has appointed Jimmy Rogers, formerly the head coach at South Dakota State, as its new head football coach. Rogers steps in to fill the position left vacant by Jake Dickert, who departed to take on the role of head coach at Wake Forest on December 18.
Washington State's athletic director, Anne McCoy, expressed confidence in Rogers' ability to lead the program, citing his character, passion, vision, and commitment. She highlighted his coaching expertise, strong work ethic, and dedication to mentoring the student-athletes under his guidance.
Rogers brings with him a successful track record from his tenure at South Dakota State, where he led the Jackrabbits to the FCS national championship in 2023 and to the national semifinals in the most recent season. During his two years as head coach, Rogers achieved an impressive 27-3 record.
His coaching prowess was recognized with the Eddie Robinson Award for the top coach in the FCS following the 2023 championship victory. Prior to his head coaching role, Rogers served as the defensive coordinator when South Dakota State clinched the national title in the previous year. With a coaching career spanning 12 years at South Dakota State, Rogers has demonstrated his commitment to the program.
Rogers' own football background includes playing linebacker for South Dakota State, where he concluded his collegiate career as the school's all-time leader in tackles. He transitioned into coaching immediately after his playing days, starting at his alma mater before a brief stint at Florida Atlantic and ultimately returning to South Dakota State.
Upon taking the helm at Washington State, Rogers faces the challenge of rebuilding a team that has been significantly impacted by the transfer portal. The Cougars experienced departures from at least 25 players and several coaches, including both coordinators.
Washington State recently competed in the Holiday Bowl, where they faced a tough 52-35 loss against No. 22 Syracuse. As Rogers assumes his new role, the university looks ahead to a new chapter under his leadership.
