Across Europe and Asia, e-bikes have surged into the mainstream, transforming urban commutes and rural adventures with their blend of pedal power and electric ease. Cities like Amsterdam and Beijing buzz with electric two-wheelers, driven by robust infrastructure and incentives.
In the US, the trend is gaining traction a bit more slowly, as riders embrace e-mobility for its affordability and eco-friendly edge. Washington State is now accelerating this shift with a new e-bike rebate lottery, a move to get more people rolling on two wheels.
Open for applications through April 23, 2025, the Washington State Department of Transportation’s program offers rebates for new e-bikes purchased at qualifying bike shops with physical stores and repair services. Residents in households earning 80% or less of their county’s median income—such as $78,000 for an individual or $100,000 for a family of three in King County—can receive a rebate up to $1,200.

All other eligible applicants qualify for a $300 rebate, which is still quite a price-cut for an e-bike. Plus, with over $4 million in funding, the state anticipates awarding around 10,000 rebates, with 60 percent of the funds prioritizing lower-income residents to make e-bikes more accessible.
Eligibility is simple: applicants must be Washington residents aged 16 or older, with a limit of one rebate per household. Winners, selected randomly via lottery, must verify residency and, if applicable, income within 96 hours of notification. Rebates must be used within 45 days or by June 30, 2025, whichever comes first, and apply only to e-bikes meeting the state’s three-class standards, excluding electric mountain bikes (as these are more for leisure and recreation) and aftermarket e-bike conversion kits.
After two years in the making, this pilot program highlights how e-bikes are becoming a go-to option for everything from daily commutes to weekly grocery hauls. With possible price hikes on the horizon due to new tariffs, the rebates come at just the right time for folks looking to go electric.
Zooming out, this program is part of a bigger e-mobility wave happening around the world—and it’s helping more people in the States hop on board. If you're thinking about switching to an e-bike, this is a great way to save some cash and be part of the movement.
And so if you live in Washington state and have been holding off that e-bike purchase, this program might be for you. You still have a few days left to apply, so head over to the Washington State Department of Transportation’s website for more info.
