On Monday, CBS Sports produced its latest three-round 2022 NFL mock draft by Ryan Wilson.
Washington maintains its No. 11 selection and then selects at No. 47 but their third-round selection is now held by Indianapolis due to the Carson Wentz trade last week.
At No. 11, Wilson has the Commanders selecting Ohio State WR Garrett Wilson. The explanation of the Garrett Wilson selection captured my attention.
We’re not gonna lie — trading for Carson Wentz was underwhelming. But what’s done is done; Terry McLaurin is one of the best young players in the league but he’s also in the final year of his rookie deal. And while Curtis Samuel is entering Year 2, he didn’t exactly set the world on fire in ’21. Wilson, meanwhile, is one of the the most dynamic players in college football and his game in many ways reminds us of Odell Beckham Jr.
If the Commanders were to keep this selection, they may indeed obtain the first wide receiver off the board, pairing him up with another former Buckeye, Terry McLaurin. That could be exciting. Yet, might there be better areas to address in the first round?
Wilson has Seattle at No. 9 taking Liberty QB Malik Willis, and at No. 20 Pittsburgh chooses QB Sam Howell (UNC). This is intriguing as it would provide Howell a year or two to sit and learn behind Mitch Trubisky who is expected to sign with the Pittsburgh Steelers Wednesday.
With Brandon Scherff expected to sign with the Jacksonville Jaguars, Washington could trade back from No. 11 obtaining a draft pick or two in the deal, and then draft his replacement Kenyon Green (Texas A&M) whom Wilson projects as going No. 22 to the Raiders.
Wilson foresees Kenny Pickett (Pitt) going to Detroit at No. 32 — the last first-round selection. Wilson only has one quarterback selected in round two, Matt Corral (Ole Miss) No. 42 to Indianapolis (yes, Washington’s position before it was traded to the Colts).
Wilson predicts Penn State safety Jaquan Brister coming to Washington at No. 47. As for Washington drafting a QB? Here is where trading back in round one could easily get them a third-round choice in return. Wilson sees Desmond Ridder (Cincinnati) going to the Falcons at No. 74 and Carson Strong (Nevada) at No. 100 to the Saints.
