Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has announced that the city will be supporting the federal government during the certification of the 2024 presidential election and the memorial events for former President Jimmy Carter despite an incoming winter storm.
The upcoming days in the capital are filled with significant events, including the certification of the 2024 presidential election by Congress on Monday and the lying in state of Jimmy Carter in the Capitol Rotunda on Tuesday.
Despite the snowstorm, the House of Representatives, as confirmed by House Speaker Mike Johnson's spokesperson, is expected to proceed with the certification of the election on Monday.
Officials have outlined that the Capitol will be open to the public from Tuesday night through Thursday to allow individuals to pay their respects to Carter before his funeral service at the Washington National Cathedral on Wednesday at 10 a.m.
During a news conference on Sunday, Mayor Bowser expressed confidence in the successful execution of these events, stating, 'Both of those events have been expected, and we expect that they will happen as planned, and we will support the federal government in all of their efforts.'
Bowser also addressed concerns about the multiple events coinciding with a weather emergency, emphasizing that the city is well-prepared to handle the situation, noting, 'That’s a glut of activity, but it’s also a glut of resources.'
