Washington D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser recently attended the prestigious Masters golf tournament in Augusta, Georgia, with the expenses covered by taxpayer funds. The mayor justified the trip as a business opportunity to promote sports and economic development in the nation's capital.

The Masters, one of professional golf's major events, is located over 500 miles away from Washington, D.C. According to Bowser's public schedule, she participated in the tournament as part of a sports and economic development visit. The city confirmed that the airline flights to and from Augusta were paid for using city funds, although the specific cost of the flights was not disclosed.

Bowser's Communications Director, Susana Castillo, explained that the mayor was invited to the tournament by individuals leading a new city task force focused on revitalizing the Gallery Place and Chinatown neighborhood. Castillo emphasized that Bowser is committed to advancing administrative interests, whether in the city or elsewhere, including at a golf tournament.

While the exact nature of the business opportunities pursued by Bowser at the Masters tournament remains unclear, the trip has sparked public interest and raised questions about the appropriate use of taxpayer money for such endeavors. The mayor's office has been contacted for further comment on the matter.
