Was Mac Jones on Cam Newton’s list of QBs he’d play behind?

Former New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton is still looking for his ticket back into the NFL, and at this point, he’s aware that could come as a backup quarterback for a team.

He doesn’t believe 32 quarterbacks in the NFL are better than him, which means he thinks he could still start under center for some team out there.

“I wanted to set the record straight by saying this is how I feel. There ain’t 32 guys that’s better than me. But I also know that I could also be a backup, and I’m willing to be a backup,” said Newton.

Those hoping to see Patriots quarterback Mac Jones on the list of players Newton would be willing to play behind are going to be sadly disappointed. However, he did mention two other AFC East quarterbacks in Josh Allen and Tua Tagovailoa.

He also name-dropped legendary Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who could be on the verge of being traded to the New York Jets.

After breaking things off with Brian Hoyer, the Patriots should be in the market for a third quarterback. A veteran with experience playing in New England would be ideal. So Newton returning as a backup in at least some capacity might have worked.

But that’s unlikely with Jones not making the list. Newton might also have to compete with Bailey Zappe, a player within the Patriots organization that is liked, to get the No. 2 spot on the roster.

This is one of those situations where the past will probably have to stay in the past. Newton gave everything he had in a less than ideal situation with the Patriots, and things didn’t work out.

It happens.
