The County Championship clash between Warwickshire and Surrey ultimately ended in a high-scoring draw, with neither side able to force a victory.
Surrey declared on 428-8 in their first innings, with England wicketkeeper Ben Foakes scoring an unbeaten 132. In response, Warwickshire made 531, with Michael Burgess scoring a career best 178 and Matthew Lamb also making a century.
As the game advanced towards a draw, Surrey's second innings lasted just 13.1 overs before the result was confirmed. Given the state of play at the time, just five overs were bowled by Warwickshire's frontline seamers, with Lamb, Rob Yates, Dan Mousley and Sam Hain all turning their arm over.
Hain ended up bowling the final balls of the match, but the 26-year-old only managed one legal delivery. Bowling to Rory Burns, Hain bowled two no balls with one delivery so bad his own captain Will Rhodes could be seen laughing.
In clips shared on social media, Hain bowls a terrible full toss that flies well over Burns' head, with Warwickshire doing a side-by-side comparison of a similar delivery he bowled back in 2016. The video was captioned: "Six years of working on the action…"
Warwickshire also posted a clip of Rhodes covering his face as he bursts out laughing at Hain's bowling, adding: "The Captain enjoyed it...." They also jokingly shared a WhatsApp message from Hain which reads: "Please no footage of my bowling. Thank you".
Reacting to the footage on social media, one fan joked: "Can’t score from the delivery if it’s 3 foot over your head!" Another joked: "That 3rd ball would have been a great yorker on a 30 yard pitch..." A third wrote: "Think the description 'bowling' is stretching it a bit."
In the end, both Warwickshire and Surrey earned 13 points each from the match. Reflecting on the draw, skipper Rhodes said: "Overall, it was a solid start for us.
"There were plenty of positives but a few things for us to reflect on so it is good now for us to have a week without a game so we can work on those before we come back against a very good Essex team."
Surrey coach Gareth Batty said: "I asked the lads to start the season on the front foot and I thought they did that quite magnificently with the bat and with the ball.
"We were 116 for 0 with the bat and then had them 41 for 4 so I am pretty happy with those starts, we just need to extend them. The pitch got slower as the game on and became turgid at times which is why the game panned out the way it did.
"But I am super happy with the way we played with bat and ball. Yes, we can be better, we asked the players to start on the front foot and they certainly did."
