Warriors “unlikely” to sign Dwight Howard

Dwight Howard’s return to the NBA may still happen, but it’s unlikely that it will be with the Golden State Warriors. The veteran big man had recently worked out with the team and spent time in LA with Draymond Green and Chris Paul. However, it would appear those workouts weren’t enough to convince the front office that Howard is a potential difference-maker for Golden State.

The veteran big man spent last season playing overseas in Taiwan. And, at 37 years old, may struggle to play consistent minutes at the NBA level. According to a report by The Athletic’s Shams Charania, the Warriors will focus on retaining roster flexibility heading into the new season instead of adding another big man to their rotation.

“The Warriors are not expected to sign Dwight Howard or another veteran center ahead of training camp, sources tell me,” Charania said. “Howard had a two-day visit with the Warriors this week, which included meetings and workouts, but the Warriors are expected to maintain flexibility to sign a potential big man later in camp or into the regular season.”

Howard is currently an unrestricted free agent and is able to sign a contract with any team in the league or overseas. The former Los Angeles Lakers champion will likely continue looking for a way back into the NBA before making a final decision on his future.

Golden State will likely enter training camp with their current roster and remain patient with their final two roster spots as they look to add the right mix of quality and veteran experience to the end of their bench – something the team has been judicious about this summer, having worked out a long list of veteran talents in recent week.
