Warriors select Santa Clara’s Brandin Podziemski with the No. 19 pick in the 2023 NBA draft

A few hours after acquiring 12-time NBA All-Star point guard Chris Paul from the Washington Wizards in a trade headlined by Jordan Poole, Mike Dunleavy Jr. had his second order of business as general manager of the Golden State Warriors.

Thursday was the 2023 NBA draft and the Warriors were on the clock with the 19th selection in the first round. The Warriors selected Brandin Podziemski out of Santa Clara.

After transferring from Illinois, Podziemski broke out in the WCC during the 2022-23 season for the Broncos. During his sophomore season, the 6-foot-5 guard averaged 19.9 points on 48.3% shooting from the field with 8.8 rebounds, 3.7 assists and 1.8 steals in 32 games.

As a 20-year-old, Podziemski notched 30 or more points in four contests for the Broncos. Against Pacific, Podziemski caught fire for a career-high 38 points with six made 3-pointers.

Prior to entering college basketball, Podziemski was named Mr. Basketball in Wisconsin. As a four-star recruit, Podziemski committed to Illinois before transferring to Santa Clara in 2022.
