SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Stephen Curry finished with 27 points and Andrew Wiggins added 26, but the Warriors squandered a 15-point first-half lead Sunday night to fall to the Kings 122-115.
Kings center Domantas Sabonis led the home team with 26 points, 22 rebounds and eight assists to keep the Warriors winless on the road.
Everything seemed to be clicking for the Warriors in the first quarter. They led by as many as 15 points, shooting 60.9% from the field and going 6-of-11 (54.5%) from deep. Curry was having his way, and the Warriors defense was stifling, limiting the Kings to 26 points in the first quarter.
The Warriors looked like themselves.
But it all came crashing down in the second.
The momentum shifted in favor of the Kings, who outscored the Warriors 38-23 in that quarter, and the Warriors defense was out of sorts. And despite pulling ahead with a Klay Thompson 3-pointer in the fourth quarter, Golden State couldn’t muster up enough stops and baskets down the stretch.
The Warriors, now 0-7 on the road this season, have given up 30 or more points in a quarter in 12 of their first 13 games. Golden State relied heavily on Curry’s fourth-quarter heroics to win back-to-back home wins last week, but the Kings defense suffocated the Warriors star.
Golden State has a quick turnaround and will be back in action Monday when the team hosts the San Antonio Spurs before traveling to Phoenix. Thompson, who sat on the backend of the Warriors’ last two sets of back-to-backs, likely won’t play Monday. It’s unclear whether coach Steve Kerr will rest any of his other starters as he did once prior.
