Warrior Scott McTominay backed by Dimitar Berbatov to be Man United regular

Dimitar Berbatov has backed Scott McTominay, insisting the Scotland international has shown he can be a regular starter for Manchester United.

The Scot has struggled to cement a starting XI spot under Erik ten Hag and in recent transfer windows, he has been linked with a move away from Old Trafford.

Newcastle and West Ham have been heavily linked with a transfer for McTominay, but instead, he has opted to fight it out in Manchester.

Before the international break the 26-year-old netted two goals against Brentford to ensure United took three points against their London opponents and club legend Berbatov feels he is vitally important.

He told Betfair: "After scoring two goals against Brentford, Scott McTominay will be hoping to get more opportunities to start matches. We'll have to see what's going to happen, but watching from the outside, you'd have to say yes he has done enough.

"His two goals were very important for Man United. Having said that, like everyone in the squad, there needs to be more consistency. When you're given an opportunity, you need to show the best of what you can do.

"I've always liked McTominay. He's a soldier. He runs everywhere and tries to do the best he can. In the last game, he was in the best position twice to score the goals - he was the unusual hero and that's what you need when things aren't going right. "
