Warrenpoint Town forced to wait as appeal hearing drags on

Warrenpoint Town will have to wait at least another week to discover their fate in the NI Football League.

The Milltown club had its appeal hearing on Wednesday night before the meeting was adjourned until May 17.

Warrenpoint are fighting their case after they were denied both a Championship and Promotion licence by the Irish FA.

Warrenpoint revealed last week that the refusal centred on an outstanding liability to HMRC of which the club was unaware, and was settled in full within a matter of days after it had been brought to the club’s attention.

Barry Gray's side were due to play Dungannon Swifts in a Premiership promotion/relegation play-off, but that game has been left in limbo until the appeal hearing is resolved.

A number of other clubs are also impacted by any potential decisions, including Annagh United who could replace Warrenpoint in the play-off picture.

The decision could also potentially have ramifications in both the Championship and Premier Intermediate League.

Warrenpoint confirmed the adjournment on their social media on Wednesday night, saying: "After a hearing tonight, the Chair of the LAC has adjourned until Wednesday 17th at 7pm."

If they lose their appeal, Warrenpoint could drop out of the NI Football League.

The club said last week: “Warrenpoint has worked tirelessly as a club – from top to bottom – to make itself a regional soccer success story and to encourage participation in the game throughout the South Down region across all ages.

"To be on the verge of a possible return to the Irish Premier division is something we see as a fitting reward for our supporters, officials, players and the wider Warrenpoint community.

"We cannot overstate how strongly we feel about this refusal, and we will not be taking this initial decision of the IFA lying down."
