Warning to holidaymakers travelling to Spain amid extreme heatwave

There has been a warning issued to anyone heading to Spain as the country is running out of ice.

Many people turn to adding ice to their drinks to help them keep cool and hydrated. And while temperatures are soaring in the sunny country, amid a heatwave, cold drinks will be needed more than ever.

However, popular spots are struggling to cope with demand and seeing a shortage of ice. Some hotels and resorts have reported the issue but the most affected are supermarkets and petrol stations.

Some supermarkets in Spain have been forced to ration the amount of ice at two bags per customer as supply has dropped this year. Majorca, in the Balearic Islands, is one of the destinations suffering from ice shortages.

Hoteliers have blamed the supply chain and increased demand due to the current heatwave and the tourism boom. Other companies blame ice factories in mainland Spain which serve the small ones in Majorca, saying they failed to stockpile during the winter as production costs have soared.

The country may run out of ice before the end of the summer, according to Sergio del Moral of the Tele Hielo distributor in Madrid, who spoke to La Vanguardia newspaper. He said: "As it has not been possible to stabilise the costs to be able to sell the ice at the usual market price, the factories stopped production and it is now, in summer, when it is being noticed. The forecast is that in August there will be no ice."
