DRIVERS in northern and eastern Scotland have been warned to take care after plummeting temperatures saw parts of the country hit with snow and ice overnight.
A yellow weather warning for snow and ice issued by the Met Office will remain in place until 11am on Wednesday morning.
A separate yellow warning will also come into place at 5pm on Wednesday night until 11am on Thursday.
It includes parts of Angus, Dundee, Fife, Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire, Moray, the Highlands, Orkney, Shetland, East Lothian and the Borders.
In a post on Twitter/X, Traffic Scotland encouraged everyone to drive safely amid the conditions.
As much as 5cm of snow was forecast to fall on higher ground over Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday.
Wintry showers will lead to ice forming on untreated surfaces during Tuesday evening and overnight into Wednesday morning, the Met Office said.
Snow will build up, especially away from the coasts, with 1cm to 3cm possible although some routes in the northeast could see up to 5cm accumulate.
According to the Met Office, this is what to expect from a yellow warning for snow and ice:
- Some roads and railways likely to be affected with longer journey times by road, bus and train services
- Some injuries from slips and falls on icy surfaces
- Probably some icy patches on some untreated roads, pavements and cycle paths
