Warning to anyone with upcycled furniture in their home

Having too many pieces of restored furniture in your home could be an interior design faux pas in 2023.

Ryan McDonough from MyJobQuote has put together an in-depth guide on the trends we should be saying goodbye to this year.

This includes overkill when it comes to DIY furniture piece. Ryan said: "Since the pandemic, many homeowners have been resorting to DIY furniture as a way of adding character to the home and saving a bit of money."

He added that while you shouldn't avoid upcycling altogether, you should avoid adding too many pieces to one room.

He said: "A singular piece of DIY furniture, such as a handmade coffee table, for example, is a great way to invoke conversation with guests, and it can often work really well with other furniture pieces in a room. However, when a room is filled with DIY furniture, it can begin to look less like an interior design choice and more like you've filled the room with a collection of recycled rubbish."

Rattan pieces are also plummeting in popularity, according to Ryan. He said: "Too much rattan is now seen as being overwhelming and tacky. While rattan may not disappear altogether, it’s looking like rattan pieces in 2023 are being used as more of an accent rather than a focal point."

He added that chevron patterns, which rose to popularity five years ago, are also "overwhelming", while all white interiors are being replaced by warmer, earthy tones.

Open plan living rooms are becoming less appealing due to more people working from home and minimalism could be on its way out.

Ryan added: "People are now becoming more drawn to textures, depth, and dimension. Colour and energy are becoming more popular. This is perhaps why we've seen a rise in the popularity of wallpaper, as this is a way to bring colour and interest to your space without bringing in large pieces of artwork."
