Warning 'tar balls' could wash up on Merseyside as 500 barrels of oil leaks into sea

'Tar balls' could wash up on Merseyside's coastline, after around 500 barrels of oil leaked from a pipe near North Wales.

Authorities in Southport, Crosby and Formby have warned that the leak of just under 80,000 litres may make it to our beaches in the form of 'tar balls.'

Sefton Council have yet to see any wash up on Merseyside's shore as of yet.

However Green Sefton staff have confirmed that they expect to see some deposits and they are working with partner agencies to make sure contamination is 'minimal.'

They have also stressed that members of the public should not attempt to remove any deposits they find and that the removal should 'be carried out by professionals.'

Gordon White, Green Sefton countryside officer, told BBC Radio Merseyside: "It's difficult to say what it might look like but it's likely to be these sort of tar balls that kind of hang in the water and gather bits of material.

"It may be difficult to identify but at the moment we're yet to see any. We don't know until it arrives."

Green Sefton rangers have been spotted on the beach on Wednesday morning, checking the area as part of their usual routine.

However a spokesperson told the ECHO that checking for any tar ball deposits will be one of their responsibilities today.

A Sefton Council spokesperson said: "We have been made aware of an oil leakage off the North Wales coast.

"Owing to currents and weather forecasts in the next 24 hours, we expect to see deposits, in the form of ‘tar balls’ washing up on our coastline as a result of this incident.

"While this type of incident is rare, Sefton Council and its partner agencies have robust plans in place to ensure any contamination or disruption to our coastline is minimal.

"We will be supporting ENI UK Limited’s clean up teams in the coming weeks to remove any potential contamination.

"Posters have been erected along our coastline to inform visitors to our beach of this issue and we would ask that dogs are kept supervised at all times.

"We would also stress that removal of this waste should only be carried out by professionals, and we ask that members of the public do not attempt to remove any ‘tar ball’ deposits.

"If you come across these deposits, in the first instance please call 0151 934 2961 to report this to the Rangers at Green Sefton.
