Warning issued by primary school as pupil has 'cardiac episode' after drinking Prime energy drink

A primary shool has issued a warning to parents after one of their pupils consumed Prime energy drink and had a "cardiac episode".

Milton Primary School in Newport, Wales said a parent reported that their child had their stomach pumped after consuming the viral drink founded by YouTube stars KSI and Logan Paul.

A text message sent out on Tuesday, May 9, by the school's management said that the school wanted to make others know about the incident, which did not occur on the premises, reports Wales Online.

It read: "This morning a parent has reported that their child has had a cardiac episode over the weekend after drinking a Prime energy drink.

"The child had to have their stomach pumped and although better now the parent wanted us to share this as a reminder of the potential harmful effects."

The Prime range of drinks was launched in 2022 with the energy drink, which contains 140mg of caffeine, being released the following year.

The drink caused a huge stir in the UK as it immediately disappeared. Cans of Prime were later being resold online for almost 10 times their retail value.

Prime Energy contains 140mg of caffeine per 12oz can in the UK and is not recommended for children under 18, according to the official Prime website. A typical caffeinated soft drink typically contains 30 to 40mg of caffeine and an 8oz cup of coffee has between 80 and 100mg.

In January Dr Deborah Lee from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy told The Mirror: "I would not recommend children drink Prime energy drinks or other energy drinks for children of any age. Children don't need energy drinks anyway – they have plenty of energy. If your child is lacking in energy take them to see their GP – do not give them an energy drink."
