Families are being urged to stay vigilant after a teenage girl was reportedly assaulted in Tameside. Greater Manchester Police has confirmed it is investigating an incident near Audenshaw Reservoir on Monday afternoon (May 9).
Officers believe the incident is isolated, but some parents have been sent a warning by text from schools this week after a report was made to police. Enquiries are ongoing and members of the public are being told to expect an increased police presence in the area while the investigation takes place.
A spokesperson for GMP said: "We received a report from a member of the public that a girl, believed to be a teenager, was assaulted by a male near Audenshaw Reservoir at about 4.30pm on Monday, May 9 2022. Officers attended both the scene and a local school, and enquiries are ongoing to establish the circumstances of the incident."
Insp Toby Knight, of GMP's Tameside district, added: "We believe this to be an isolated incident as we haven't received any similar reports in the area. Neighbourhood officers will be conducting house-to-house and CCTV enquiries, so there will be an increased visible presence in the area."
Some Tameside schools sent a message to parents and carers on Tuesday, urging pupils to take care in the Audenshaw Reservoir area following the incident. A message from Denton Community College said that children should 'be vigilant, avoid the area altogether or not go there alone'.
Any incidents can be reported to GMP by calling 101 or online at the force's website, while 999 should be called in an emergency. Reports can also be made anonymously to the independent charity Crimestoppers by phoning 0800 555 111.
