Warning issued about motorway closures set to cause disruption for drivers this week

There will be a number of planned motorway closures in place on motorways across the north west this week. Motorists have been warned the closures could cause disruption to their travels.

Roadworks and repairs on the road networks are the main reason for a majority of the closures. Some work has just begun, while some has been ongoing.

Lancs Live reports that road works are being completed across the M6, M57, M60 and M66. The M60 has four separate road and repair works ongoing at the moment, which are set to continue throughout the week and following months.

Listed below are the road closures in place for the next week:

M60

Wellington Road bridge

Wellington Road Bridge crosses over the M60 motorway, between junctions 1 and 27. Safety improvements are currently being carried out - including replacing both sides of the existing barrier with a new 1.8-metre-high steel barrier.

Work began on April 25 and is set to continue until the end of this month. Throughout the scheme, there'll be daytime lane closures in place on the A6 Wellington Road and is will be closed overnight between 9pm and 5am (extended to 7am on weekends). Access for pedestrians and cyclists will be available along Wellington Road at all times.

The work is now in its final stage - removal of temporary scaffolding. The closures will be in place between 9pm and 5am on the following dates:

M60 anti-clockwise between junctions 1 and 25 - 24 June to 28 June and 4 July to 8 July

M60 clockwise between junctions 26 and 1 - 29 June to 1 July and 8 July to 12 July

A560 Great Egerton Street closures - 2 July and 12 July

Barton Bridge

Barton Bridge carries the M60 over the Manchester Ship Canal. Improvement work is being carried out to the safety barrier on both sides of the bridge - including replacing the existing structure with a new 1.8-metre-high barrier.

To do this work safely, a series of overnight (8pm to 5am) lane closures in place on both the clockwise and anti-clockwise carriageways until September 4. There’ll always be at least one lane open in each direction, ensuring journeys are maintained. Each morning the lane closures will be removed.

Wardley Hall bridge

Essential work is being carried out on Wardley Hall Bridge, between junctions 14 and 15 of the M60. The work involves replacing parts of the safety barrier in the central reservation, as the structure has reached the end of its serviceable life.

To do this, traffic management has been installed between junctions 13 and 15 of the M60. The repairs on the safety barrier began on June 9 and are set to continue for around six weeks.

During this time, there’ll be 24-hour narrow lanes and a speed limit of 50 mph. To reduce the disruption on motorists, National Highways will be carrying out our work overnight (9pm to 6am) when traffic levels are lowest.

Junction 20 and 21

The ground conditions underneath the safety barrier between junctions 20 and 21 of the M60 clockwise is failing. As a result, the foundations to the safety barrier has weakened.

Work to move the safety barrier onto the same foundations as the M60 is now underway and will continue until October.

M66

Parts of the safety barrier are being replaced between junction three and junction four of M66, as well as carriageway resurfacing. This is to ensure the network safe and operational.

The repairs started on March 14 for around 24 weeks, with work taking place between 9pm and 6am. To safely carry out the work, there will be narrow lanes in place and a speed restriction of 50mph and this will continue until September

M6

The River Dane bridge carries the M6 motorway over the River Dane between junctions 18 and 19 - but the piers supporting the bridge have weakened and need essential repair works.

Now work to strengthen the piers is underway and is being carried out below the motorway level. As a result, no traffic management will be in place on the road above.

To ensure safety, the load carrying capacity of the bridge will be reduced to a maximum of 44-tonne vehicles. Restrictions will allow all normal traffic to continue using the motorway without disruption.

Heavy loads will not be able to use the bridge and must use another route. The restrictions will be in place for 24 months from April 2, 2022.

M57

Resurfacing work is being carried out on the M57 between junction one and junction two. Work to replace road markings, traffic detection cables and bridge joints will also be carried out.

To allow this to take place, overnight closures have been planned between June 13 and November 2022. The closures will be in place during the week between 8pm and 6am.

Work will be carried out during Monday to Friday between the following dates:

  • Monday 27 June to Friday 5 August 2022, overnight full closures of the M57 southbound between junctions 2 and 1
  • Monday 8 August to 23 September, overnight full closures of the M57 northbound between junctions 1 and 2.
