Warning from health experts as Nottinghamshire's R rate confirmed

Nottinghamshire's coronavirus R-rate could still be above one - meaning infections could be rising in some areas.

Nottinghamshire County Council's analysts said the R-rate - or reproduction rate - was between 0.9 and 1.1 as of Friday, January 28.

This rate covers both the city and county.

An R number of 1.0 means that, on average, every person who is infected will infect one other person and, therefore, any number above 1.0 means the virus is more readily spreading.

It comes as it was warned that Nottingham and beyond was still "in a serious position".

Omicron, the current dominant strain, caused a significant rise in case rates over the festive period.

While cases have indeed been on a decline, the virus remains within communities across the county.

Speaking of the situation, Lucy Hubber, the city's director of public health, said: "We are seeing that flattening out in all adult age groups. The decline is lessening in all adult age groups.

"Again in line with the national picture, particularly for early years and primary age children we are seeing increases in case rates and that is certainty having an impact on primary schools and staff in primary schools, and on people who have children of that age who have to take time out of work to look after those children.

"There is a knock-on effect into the health and care sector and other front-line services.

"I'm just going to remind us all that, despite the fantastic news of the decline, actually we are still in a position with incredibly high case rates.

"We are certainly in a position where I would strongly recommend our community continues to think about the measures."
