Experts have issued a warning over smart speakers, as they say that the devices are 'always on, always listening and sometimes watching'. Smart speakers - which primarily play music - are clever devices which can source information from the web and can even do your online shopping for you.
While they are no-doubt convenient, the cybersecurity experts from VPNOverview have warned of privacy risks associated with owning a smart speaker. The experts explain that it's easy to accidentally 'wake' these speakers, so people should remain cautious.
From unintentional online purchases to opening the door to hackers, certain smart speaker mistakes could prove to be risky. With that in mind, the cybersecurity aces have shared some of the ways in which you can make sure you're using your device safely.
They explain that your smart speaker is "always on" and awaiting its command word. However, the devices can misinterpret certain words or phrases as their wake word.
This may lead to things turning on or off as well as awkward calls being made - and they could even purchase items without your knowledge if you happen to be talking about them.
One way to deal with this is by having the mic muted on your device. All smart speakers have the option to manually turn off the microphone, however, this completely removes the convenience of the device.
You could also enable two-factor authorisation or two-step verification to ensure that there are no unintentional online purchases.
This will send a code to your phone via text or via an authenticator application. It provides an added layer of security for users and allows you to verify any purchase you make.
The cyber security experts also warned over third-party software risks as certain skills that your speaker can learn weren't created by manufactures like Amazon, Google and Apple. Instead, some downloadable skills were created by third-party developers who can gain access to your data.
While these third-party software developers might not intend to misuse your information, their moderation may not be as thorough as a large manufacturer. This can become a gateway for hackers leading to leaks of information, as well as potential eavesdropping.
The VPNOverview experts comment: "The convenience of smart devices comes with the cost of our privacy. There are no other options to a smart speaker that provides this level of convenience, entertainment, and education.
"As long as users are careful with the speaker's placement, how they use it and by ensuring their account is set up correctly, they can prevent possible hacks and sharing of unwanted data."
