THE owners of a Fife beauty spot have said safety is their priority following social media reports that a dog became ill and died after visiting the site.
A post on community Facebook page for people in the village of Kelty warned dog walkers to stay away from the St Ninians site, raising concerns that an animal had come into contact with a dangerous substance.
St Ninians is a wellness park on the site of a former opencast mine.
The Facebook post stated: "We don’t know at this stage if it’s from the water or from poison up there but it’s the only place the dog had been walked and was showing signs of changes health wise half way round.
"Vets have confirmed it’s some form of poisoning though and this was a fit healthy three-year-old dog."
A spokesperson for National Pride responded: "Irene Bisset, director, National Pride (St Ninians) Ltd, was very concerned to hear about the dog that took ill on St Ninians last week.
"Irene is a dog owner herself and regularly walks her dogs across the site. She sends her kindest thoughts to the family who have lost their precious pet and would like to give assurance to the public and all pet owners that the company takes all incidents on site very seriously.
"There are, however, no poisonous substances that are used on the site for any reason at any time.
"Public safety and that of animals, wildlife and birds on our site is a priority and we will not compromise this by the use of harmful substances."
