South Belfast DUP councillor Tracy Kelly said that she was shocked to hear of the discovery and urged parents to be vigilant with their children in the area.
She said: "I am shocked to hear that this has been found outside of a local primary school.
"I dread to think what could have happened if these were found by a child instead of an adult.
"I would urge families in the area to be vigilant and if they see anything similar to report it immediately to the police."
A PSNI spokesperson said: "On Tuesday, 7th February, police received a report that a small bag containing tablets was found close to a school in the Maldon Street area of south Belfast.
"Police attended the school. The tablets had been safely disposed of.
"We would encourage anyone who finds an item that they are concerned might relate to the illegal supply of drugs, to call us on 101.
"You can also make a report to police online via www.psni.police.uk/makeareport or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, or online at www.crimestoppers-uk.org."
