David Warner's first full campaign with Sydney Thunder has been a success after being named captain of the BBL's team of the tournament.

After making 346 runs and playing a role in the Thunder's return to the finals, Warner has been selected as opener alongside Hobart's breakout star Mitch Owen.

Seven players, including Perth allrounder Cooper Connolly, have been included in the BBL's best squad for the first time.

"It is brilliant to see the likes of David Warner and Jason Behrendorff earn selection for the first time, alongside a host of other experienced players," BBL boss Alistair Dobson said.

"Their performances over many years reflect all players' dedication to the BBL.

"Similarly, the BBL has been the launch pad for young players like Cooper Connolly and Mitch Owen, and a place for internationals including Sam Billings and Jamie Overton to showcase their talent."

After retiring from international cricket, Warner's signature as a full-time player was a big one for the Thunder and the BBL.

Warner's leadership ban, stemming from Sandpapergate, was overturned last year to allow the 38-year-old to captain the Thunder.

The former Australian star is desperate to lead the Thunder to their second title when they face crosstown rivals the Sydney Sixers in the Challenger match at the SCG on Friday night.

The winner of that game will travel to Hobart to face the Hurricanes in the final on Monday night.

BBL TEAM OF THE TOURNAMENT: David Warner (Sydney Thunder, captain), Mitch Owen (Hobart Hurricanes), Cooper Connolly (Perth Scorchers), Marcus Stoinis (Melbourne Stars), Sam Billings (Thunder), Glenn Maxwell (Melbourne Stars), Tim David (Hobart Hurricanes), Ben Dwarshuis (Sydney Sixers), Tom Rogers (Melbourne Renegades), Jason Behrendorff (Perth Scorchers), Lloyd Pope (Adelaide Strikers). 12th man Jamie Overton (Adelaide Strikers)
