Warm tributes to Lanarkshire dad-of-three who died after being struck by a car

Heartfelt tributes have been paid to a "wonderful" Lanarkshire dad-of-three who tragically died after being hit by a car on a Coatbridge street.

Johnny Gallagher, 72, has been named locally as the victim of the shocking accident on the town's Whifflet Street, which happened at around 7.20pm on Thursday.

Johnny has been fondly remembered by his heartbroken family who say he was loved by many.

Daughter-in-law Lauren Gallagher paid tribute to Johnny on social media following the tragic incident.

She said: "Last night our family had a very shocking and sad turn of events.

"My husband and wonderful brother-in-law's lost their father. He was hit by a car and didn't survive.

"He died at 72 and was loved by many. Thank you to those who have reached out, we're going to be making plans once we have a moment to collect ourselves.

"RIP Johnny G, you will be missed greatly."

Others also paid tribute to Johnny, who had a grandchild on the way at the time of his death.

He was described as a "legend" who was well known in the area.

Lea-ann Veldon said: "He was a legend will be sorely missed by many.

"R.I.P Johnny G, Whifflet legend."

June Greenshields added: "Tragic. Knew him years ago and saw him in the Whifflet very often. So sad. R.I.P Johnny xxx"

While Patrick Gorman wrote: "Rip Johnny G. He will be missed."

And Jim Glavin said: "Very sorry to hear this , nice man who I always spoke to in the Barnyard with a Guinness of course, RIP Johnny."

Johnny tragically died just one hour after another fatal crash in the area.

A 55-year-old woman was hit by a car on Croftfoot Road, near Rutherglen in South Lanarkshire at 6.35pm the same night and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Sergeant John Tait told Lanarkshire Live : “Sadly two fatal road crashes have occurred in the region in a short space of time.

"We are looking to speak to anyone who was in the Whifflet Street area at the time or has dash-cam footage of the incident to get in touch via 101."
