Wanted man tried to flee Nottingham city centre on electric scooter with four blades in his bag

A wanted man was found with four blades after trying to escape police on a electric scooter. Magistrates issued a warrant for Mark Bingley’s arrest after he breached a court order relating to a burglary conviction and drug offences last year.

He was caught on Wednesday, January 4 by police officers who were patrolling the streets in Nottingham city centre. Upon seeing the officers, Bindley tried to get away on an electric scooter.

However, his escape attempt failed and he was arrested in Wheeler Gate. Officers searched his bag and found two serrated blades – a type of blade used on saws – and two small scalpel blades.

Bingley, of South Parade, Skegness, was charged with possessing articles which had a blade or were sharply pointed. The 38-year-old appeared at Nottingham Magistrates’ Court on Thursday, January 5 and pleaded guilty.

Magistrates sentenced him to a 12-month community order, including 10 rehabilitation activity days. He must also pay a £98 victim surcharge.

Sergeant Jonathan Pothecary, of the city centre Operation Compass policing team, said he was pleased his officers had managed to removed more dangerous weapons from the streets.

He said: “We will continue to be proactive in finding and removing dangerous weapons from our streets.

"I would urge anyone who is concerned about someone they believe to carry a knife to contact the police so we can act quickly to take weapons off the streets - and the people who use them to cause harm - in our neighbourhoods.”
