Wanna Break Into The Film Industry? Pitch A Short Film About Road Safety To Get Started

Consider yourself a budding Martin Scorcese, do you? Well, why not put it to the test?

That’s right. The Transport Accident Commission (TAC) is looking to fund short film pitches from up-and-coming filmmakers and content creators, and they want to hear what you can do.

Keen to get involved? Here’s how.

How to enter

First, apologies to Mr Scorcese himself, but participants in the competition must be between 18 and 30 years old.

All pitches must also focus on and depict the competition’s “Split Second” theme and can choose between two road safety focuses: driving tired or seatbelt usage. How you choose to show off that message is up to you. It could be someone driving home late from a party or not taking a moment to wear a seatbelt because they’re late to work. But alas, who am I to give you ideas? Let your imagination run wild.

To enter, visit the Split Second website for more details on the competition and to learn how to structure your pitch. If you’re curious about the entry standard, you can also check out the previous winning short film entries and runner-ups on the site.

What’s the competition for?

How many of us have a mate who casually admits to reckless driving? I’m sure we all thought of someone within seconds. For anyone who realised how grim that is, don’t worry; statistics can prove it.

Just last year, a total of 295 people lost their lives on Victorian roads, marking a 22.4 per cent increase from the previous year. Due to the growing number of traffic accidents, it’s essential to keep responsible driving at the top of everyone’s mind.

The competition is also an opportunity to inspire young creators to spread the message about road safety, while also helping them get a foot in the door into the industry. Talk about a win-win.

What do you win?

Two winning entries will be awarded a $5,000 cash prize and a $35,000 production budget, plus mentoring from Truce Films and creative agency TABOO.

This year, one of the prizes will be awarded to a young creator from a culturally and linguistically diverse background, to encourage more diverse talent in the creative industry. By highlighting young multicultural voices, the competition aims to make road safety messages resonate across Victoria’s many communities, contributing to safer roads for everyone.

Even if you don’t win, the competition is a solid opportunity to check out what other local creatives are doing, so you can get out there and find your people.

Best of luck to all who enter, and may your pitch be perfect.

Competition ends November 24.
