Walton school ordered to improve in first Ofsted inspection

A new Liverpool special school has been told to improve by education officials in its first inspection.

Cavendish View School in Walton has been found to require improvement by Ofsted in terms of its quality of education, leadership and management. A three-day visit to the site by a team of officers in May identified that while behaviour and personal development is good at the Cavendish Drive school, things can get better.

A report released by Ofsted said as many staff as new to post, “they do not have the up-to-date subject knowledge they need to help them to implement the curriculum consistently well. This means that pupils do not learn as well as they should in some subjects.”

The school, which is managed by Windsor-based Salutem Care and Education, has 12 pupils on the roll between the ages of five and 11. The Ofsted inspection found that in some subjects, effective checks on pupils’ learning are not in place. As a result, in these subjects, staff do not have a secure understanding of how well pupils are learning.

Inspectors called on leaders to improve their procedures, such as implementing staff training, monitoring curriculum subjects and ensuring assessments are in place accordingly. The school does however meet independent school standards.

The report said while there are improvements to be made at Cavendish View, pupils are happy and safe at school. It added: “Parents and carers told inspectors that their children enjoy coming to school and learning and playing with their friends.

“Typically, parents said that staff are welcoming, friendly and caring. Pupils new to the school settle in quickly and soon become familiar with school routines.”

Gary Laville, Group Quality and Governance Director at Salutem Care and Education, said: “We thank Ofsted for highlighting the very positive aspects of the new school in its first inspection. As a direct result of the feedback, we have reviewed the current systems and are implementing changes to the curriculum to address the matters raised.

“We note the encouraging comments about where our hardworking team is doing well and will continue to evolve as a school and a group to the benefit of the pupils.”
