Walmart Employee Left Work Mid Shift, Grabbed Gun and Killed Coworker in Georgia Store: Police

A shooting at a Walmart in Newton County, Georgia, has left two dead and one injured, according to law enforcement.

An employee of the Walmart Supercenter in the Covington area, about 35 miles away from Atlanta, shot two other employees inside the Walmart, killing one and injuring the other. The suspect then travelled to a nearby home and broke in, shooting and killing a woman he knew inside the home.

The incident occurred at around 1:30 am, in the early hours of Friday, when the suspect left the Walmart to go retrieve his firearm, opening fire after returning to the store, according to ABC Eyewitness News.

"The suspect specifically targeted individuals they knew," the Newton County Sheriff's Office said.

The suspect was apprehended by law enforcement in Aiken, South Carolina, near the Georgia-South Carolina line, right by Augusta, Georgia, according to Newton County Sheriff's Sgt. Jack Redlinger.

Both victims were described as "acquaintances" of the gunman. The injured employee was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

"We're heartbroken by what's happened," Bentonville, Arkansas-based Walmart said in a statement.

"There's no place for violence in our stores," the company added. "We're focused on taking care of our associates and supporting law enforcement with their investigation."
