Wallsend cocaine dealer claimed to have 'no idea of seriousness' of his drugs operation

A "naive" cocaine dealer had "no idea of the seriousness" of his drugs operation.

Police discovered 20 bags of the class A drug inside Jake Mitchell's Vauxhall Corsa after he stopped in a car park in North Shields.

A court heard that the 24-year-old immediately confessed he'd been street dealing to fund his own drug habit.

In total, 7g of cocaine were seized from Mitchell, of Bowman Drive, Wallsend.

But his illegal enterprise will now potentially landed him behind bars after he pleaded guilty to possessing a class A drug with intent to supply.

Leanne Duffy, prosecuting at North Tyneside Magistrates' Court, said police followed Mitchell as he drove through North Shields on the evening of March 11 last year.

"They followed him to a car park," Miss Duffy continued. "The defendant exited the vehicle. Officers searched the vehicle and inside there were a number of bags containing a white powder, two mobile phones and a wallet containing cash.

"During interview, the defendant said the powder was cocaine. He said he purchased it in a block and split it up to sell for profit."

The court heard that Mitchell had no past convictions and had begun selling the drug to fund his own cocaine habit.

Judith Curry, defending, added: "He got involved through naivety and immaturity. He's never been involved with the police before. He's never been arrested or interviewed .

"He didn't have an understanding of what he was doing. He admitted to the police that he had been selling the cocaine. He had not realised the seriousness of what he was doing."

Magistrates deemed their powers to finalise the case were insufficient and Mitchell was sent to Newcastle Crown Court on March 22 for sentence.

In the meantime, he was released on unconditional bail.
