Wallaroos face Wales as World Cup QFs loom

The Wallaroos have a team motto at the World Cup: Earn the right.

It's never been more appropriate than this week, as they eye a second-straight victory in New Zealand to seal a quarter-final place.

Jay Tregonning's side snapped a seven-match losing streak and beat Scotland last week to keep their cup hopes alive.

On Saturday afternoon, they're back in action in Whangarei against Wales, one decent hit-out away from the knockout phase.

"We're focusing on earning the right," the coach said.

"We're making sure we're not leaving any stone unturned to earn the right to go back-to-back for the first time this year and to make the quarter-finals."

The formula for deciding the quarter-finalists isn't simple, given it's a 12-team tournament where eight teams progress, meaning even a narrow loss may be enough for Australia to sneak through.

However, if the Wallaroos win, they're assured of both advancing and avoiding the two top-ranked sides in the last eight - giving them a possible pathway deeper into the tournament.

Piper Duck said the team had adopted another nickname for their main training session, calling them 'Test Tuesdays' to show their seriousness.

"To earn the right is to earn the right at training, earn the right at Test Tuesdays to get on that paddock and really perform and be there for one another," she said.

Tregonning has made three changes to the side that managed a come-from-behind 14-12 over Scotland.

Bridie O'Gorman returns to the front row, Michaela Leonard comes into the second row and Ivania Wong will start on the wing.

The key to Australian success may be Bienne Terita, who has five tries in her first three Tests for Australia, including three at the tournament already.

Sharni Williams also stands on the brink of history: the centre is two tries away from overtaking Tricia Brown as Australia's all-time try scorer and has form against Wales, scoring in her side's last three Tests against them.

Australia is unbeaten in four meetings with the Welsh, all of which have taken place at previous World Cups.
