Walkers debunks popular cheese and onion flavour crisps packaging myth

It's the widely debated myth that many crisp loving fans have pondered over for many years, but it looks like Walkers Cheese and Onion crisps have always had the same colour packet.

Crisp loving fans have been convinced for many years the UK brand had actually switched the colour from green to blue, leading to confusion with another popular flavour.

But it looks like that has never been the case, as Walkers has this week released a statement confirming the packets have always been the same - but some fans are still not convinced.

The crisp manufacturer is the oddity of the crisps world, as it is the only brand to put their Cheese and Onion in blue packets and Salt and Vinegar in green packets, which is different to the likes of Golden Wonder. Walkers confirmed to The Express this has always been the case, despite what we all may believe.

The confusion has led many sceptical fans to take to social media to say that the difference in packaging had caught them out many times. One man said on Twitter: "The amount of times I have picked up what I thought was Salt and Vinegar, only to be greeted with the awful cheese and onion flavour...sigh."

Another wrote: "We swore they used to be green and the switch happened around 1994, we used to joke about it because my mother's favourite is Cheese and Onion but she dislikes Salt and Vinegar." A third posted: "Mind blown by this."

The debate has re-emerged so many times that Walkers have even put the question "Why did you switch the colours of Salt & Vinegar and Cheese & Onion flavour Walkers Crisps?" on the FAQ section of its website, reports Hull Live.

Walkers have said in response: "We’re often asked this! Our Salt & Vinegar and Cheese & Onion flavour crisps packs have always been the colours they are today. Contrary to popular belief, we’ve never swapped the colours around, not even temporarily. We’ve no plans to change these designs, as they’re signature to our brand."

Walkers introduced its Cheese and Onion flavour, inspired by the Ploughman's Lunch, in 1954. It was the firm's first flavoured variety of crisps. Golden Wonder and Smiths, another PepsiCo product, has always used green for cheese flavours. And KP Snacks' Hula Hoops and Pom-Bears also place their cheese treats in green packaging.
