Wales Women rip up side after heavy England defeat

Wales Women have made seven changes to the side that was soundly beaten by England at the Arms Park last weekend as they head to France for their penultimate TikTok Six Nations fixture this Sunday.

Ioan Cunningham's side proved competitive, if a tad blunt, for 30 minutes against the Red Roses in round three, before England pulled away in style for a one-sided victory.

Wales will now look to bounce back when they take on France, the only Six Nations side who have traditionally challenged England in recent years, at Stade des Alpes in Grenoble this weekend.

Centre Hannah Jones once again captains the side, with Lleucu George replacing Hannah Bluck to partner the skipper in midfield.

In the back-three, Carys Williams-Morris returns on the wing having missed the England defeat through RAF duty, joining full-back Courtney Keight and winger Lisa Neumann. Elinor Snowsill keeps her place at fly-half as she reaches 75 caps for her country, but she is joined by Ffion Lewis at scrum-half, who gets her first start of 2023 over Keira Bevan.

In the pack, Cunningham has opted to name an all-new front-row, with Abbey Constable making her Test debut. She packs down alongside the experienced Carys Phillips and Cerys Hale. The impressive trio of Kelsey Jones, Gwenllian Pyrs and Sisilia Tuipulotu move to the bench.

The other change in the pack sees openside Kate Williams make her first Test start for Wales, having made her debut in round one against Ireland.

Wales head coach Ioan Cunningham said: "France will be a major test for us, they are one of the best teams in the world and we always knew playing England and then playing France away was going to be a major challenge. But these are the tests we want, we are an ambitious team and we need to know where we are and we have made no secret that we have to build our strength in depth ahead of the next World Cup.

"We have reviewed the performance against England and we proved we can compete and proved we can cause the best in the world problems, we just have to do it for longer.

"The players selected have proven themselves in training and deserve the opportunity to wear the shirt and as coaches we are looking forward to seeing them perform.

"Elinor Snowsill will earn her 75th Wales cap and that is an achievement that should be celebrated by everyone in Welsh rugby. Snowy’s experience and calmness at fly-half will be invaluable against France.

"Prop Abbey Constable makes her debut and she has worked hard in training throughout this Six Nations campaign and we are all excited to see how she performs. She will be our third new cap in this tournament and, like Kate Williams, who makes her first start for Wales at flanker, it’s an opportunity to show what we have seen in training."

Wales: Courtney Keight; Lisa Neumann, Hannah Jones (capt), Lleucu George, Carys Williams-Morris; Elinor Snowsill, Ffion Lewis; Abbey Constable, Carys Phillips, Cerys Hale, Abbie Fleming, Georgia Evans, Bethan Lewis, Kate Williams, Sioned Harries.

Replacements: Kelsey Jones, Gwenllian Pyrs, Sisilia Tuipulotu, Bryonie King, Alex Callender, Keira Bevan, Robyn Wilkins, Niamh Terry.
