Wales v England rugby matches reportedly set to go behind TV paywall this summer

Wales' World Cup summer warm-up games are set to go behind a paywall, claim reports.

Warren Gatland's men host England at the Principality Stadium on August 5 and then head to Twickenham for a return clash with Steve Borthwick's Red Roses the following week.

Wales wind up their preparations for this autumn's global showpiece in France with a mouthwatering Cardiff clash against world champions South Africa.

According to The Rugby Paper, Amazon Prime are intent on landing the broadcast rights for the games, as well as the plethora of others involving the Six Nations teams this summer.

The online streaming giant dabbled into Test rugby with the Autumn Nations Cup in 2020 and have continued their coverage of November matches since.

Prime Video see a fresh opportunity in the coming months and are reported to have targeted Wales' trio of glamour fixtures.

The Rugby Paper claim they are also looking to broadcast England's other summer games, away to Ireland and at home to Fiji. Six Nations champions Ireland also meet Italy and Samoa.

The summer jamboree of international rugby kicks off with Scotland versus Italy at Murrayfield on July 29, as the Six Nations teams crank up their preparations for World Cup. The Scots also play France home and away, as well as Georgia.

The other games for France and Italy are also said to be on Prime's schedule, as well as the August 25 Twickenham blockbuster between southern hemisphere powerhouses New Zealand and South Africa.

There has previously been a clamour from fans and politicians for Wales rugby Tests to always be on free-to-air television, given the importance of the sport here and how it forms a key part of the Welsh psyche and landscape.

But Amazon Prime brought in the paywall for the autumn Tests and it seems a subscription service will be required once more this summer.

The World Cup games will be on terrestrial TV, with ITV winning the rights for the tournament.

Wales start their campaign against Fiji in Bordeaux on Sunday September 10, with a night time kick off.

Gatland's men then head to the south coast to take on Portugal in Nice six days on, before a showdown with Australia in Lyon on Sept 24.

They then have a chance to rest weary bodies before winding up the group stages with an October 7 clash against Georgia in Nantes.

Wales are in the much easier half of the draw and a top two spot will likely see them face one of England or Argentina in the quarter-finals on the weekend of October 14-15.

The world's top four teams, hosts France, Six Nations champions Ireland, world champions South Africa and traditional powerhouses New Zealand are each in the other side of the draw. That means that whatever happens, it is impossible for two of them to reach the semi-finals.
