Wales are poised to award a first Test start to Exeter Chiefs captain Dafydd Jenkins when they head to Murrayfield to face Scotland in round two of the Six Nations on Saturday.
And Jenkins’ Sandy Park team-mate Christ Tshiunza is also being considered for a place in the run-on XV, fitness permitting after an injury.
The changes are being pondered as Warren Gatland looks to reinvigorate Wales’ pack after the 34-10 beating by Ireland in round one. Follow live Wales team announcement updates here.
And they are not the only alterations the head coach has been mulling over after the disappointing opening to the tournament.
With Tshiunza potentially slotting in at six, there’s the possibility of a reshaping of the entire Wales back row.
Tommy Reffell is being looked at for the No. 7 shirt in place of Justin Tipuric, while Jac Morgan could be shifted from blindside to figure at No. 8 ahead of Taulupe Faletau, who gave away three penalties against Ireland.
Wyn Jones may also earn a recall in the front row.
It is believed Gatland may keep faith with the back line that started in round one.
But it’s set to be a different story up front, with the 20-year-old Jenkins potentially packing down alongside Adam Beard in the second row, replacing Alun Wyn Jones. When the 6ft 7in, 18st 5lb forward came on against Ireland, he made six carries in 19 minutes, banking 35 metres for his side.
Wales’ starting pack was widely felt to be short of ball carriers last weekend, so turning to Tshiunza might help in the back row. The fitness of individual players isn’t known, but a Wales team without Faletau would be a shock.
The team is due to be officially announced at noon on Thursday.
