Wales player ratings v Iran as Aaron Ramsey endures nightmare and Joe Allen culpable for both goals

Wayne Hennessey 5

Had relatively little to do but, generally speaking, protected his goal and his box well. Gathered shots from distance with consummate ease. Made excellent saves in the second half from Ezatolahi and Azmoun. Sent off for a kung-fu kick on Taremi late on.

Connor Roberts 3

Had Welsh hearts in their mouth with an awful early pass which led to a disallowed Iranian goal. Was shaken a little after that and had to recompose himself. Came off for Brennan Johnson in a tactical switch before the hour.

Chris Mepham 5

Acquitted himself well at the back. With the midfield so open in front of him he had to do a lot of backs-to-the-wall defending and stood up to the task for the most part.

Joe Rodon 6 (star man)

Much like above, really. Found himself 1v1 with Sardar Azmoun too often but gave as good as he got in that battle. Booked for an awful tackle in the first half.

Ben Davies 5

Solid enough in the back three. Was moved to left back when the shape was changed and couldn't get forward as much as he would have liked as Wales were pinned back. Did have one hammered effort saved brilliantly by the Iranian keeper.

Neco Williams 4

His first touch was maddening at times, despite doing other aspects of his wing-back play well. His crossing was a little sub-standard for a player of his quality.

Ethan Ampadu 4

His passing was a little exposed at times and had to compensate for Ramsey's lack of legs in the middle of the park. Still made one or two decent interventions. Subbed.

Aaron Ramsey 2

Another poor showing from one of Wales' big players. Looked lethargic and off the pace. Rarely seem him look so off colour and was a big blow to Wales' hopes. Subbed after Hennessey's red card.

Harry Wilson 4

Didn't see a great deal of him and his set-piece delivery isn't what you would expect. Taken off before the hour mark with pace sorely needed.

Gareth Bale 3

Just doesn't seem in sync with the rest of the players as he usually does. Tried speculative shots which didn't come off, crossed poorly and was generally very quiet.

Kieffer Moore 5

Had one fantastic chance early on, latching in to a cross to poke towards goal, but it was saved. Was generally neat and tidy but will have been frustrated by the dearth of quality crosses.

Subs

Daniel James (Wilson 58) 4 - Definitely gave Wales an outlet further up the pitch when he came on. But, as is often the case, that end product was just lacking.

Brennan Johnson (Roberts 58) 4 - One or two bright moments, but, like James, that final moment just evaded him.

Joe Allen (Ampadu 77) 3 - His poor clearances led to the first goal and also culpable for giving the ball away as Iran broke for their second goal.

Danny Ward (Ramsey 88) N/A
