Wales' Joel Makin takes silver in squash at Commonwealth Games

Wales' Joel Makin brought home squash silver at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.

Aberdare's Makin lost out to New Zealand's Paul Coll in the final, a competitor who had won five of his last six meetings with the Welshman.

Makin, who saw off England’s James Willstrop 3-0 in the men’s singles semi-final, took the first set 11-3.

The second was a far tighter affair, with the Kiwi taking it 11-9 to level matters. But the Welshman wrestled back the advantage in the third, winning it 11-8.

However, Coll made sure it went the distance by taking the fourth 11-8. And he wrapped up the honours in the final game, coming from behind twice in the match to take the gold.

It means Wales have now won 15 medals at the Commonwealth Games - three golds, four silvers and eight bronzes.

Wales are eighth in the overall standings, behind Australia, England, Canada, New Zealand, Scotland, South Africa and India.
