A Swansea restaurant which enjoys one of the finest panoramic sea views anywhere in Wales has suddenly closed. The Grape and Olive, which is situated on the top floor of the Meridian Tower, first opened in 2010 after being taken over by SA Brain. It is the highest restaurant in Wales
But a notice has now been placed at the ground floor level warning customers that it is no longer currently operating. It reads: "The Grape and Olive is now officially closed until further notice. Apologies for any inconvenience caused."
The restaurant is located on the 29th floor of the 300ft tower overlooking the city with unrivalled views. It had initially been known as The Penthouse when it first opened in 2009, but soon closed after being dogged by staff protests and claims of late pay, leading to a takeover by SA Brain, which has run it ever since. We reported in May last year how SA Brain had sold the freehold and leasehold interest in nearly 100 of its pubs across south Wales in a deal worth tens of millions of pounds. The family-run brewery had put most of its pub property portfolio up for sale the year before that with a price tag of £87.5m.
Over the years, the Grape and Olive served many famous customers, including actor David Hasselhoff and comedian John Bishop, who posed for pictures with fans as he had a meal before he performed at the nearby Swansea Arena.
SA Brain has been contacted for comment.
