Wales' highest pub that dates back 400 years is up for sale

If you're hiking for a pie and pint as your destination reward, you'll probably need them if your target is The Sportsman's Arms, also known as Tafarn yr Heliwr.

Because this watering hole is said to be the highest pub in Wales at about 1,430ft above sea level, perched on the Denbigh Moors between Denbigh and Pentrefoelas.

Standing in grounds and paddocks of about 4.8 acres, the Inn has been a place to gather for many years, said to date back to the 17th century.

But, you'll also be disappointed when you arrive for your refreshments, as the pub closed in October 2021 and is now vacant, so no pie and pint currently on offer here.

The Sportsmans Arms was a well known Inn to many, standing on a well known tourist route into the heart of north Wales towards Betws-y-Coed and about 13 miles from Snowdonia.

It was also a welcome refreshment stop for people visiting the nearby Brenig and Alwen Reservoirs noted for numerous country walks, cycle tracks and renowned fishing in the Brenig.

The estate agent selling the former pub says it is offered for sale freehold and free of any tie.

The substantial property includes the versatile Inn area, that has a main lounge bar and an additional bar area, a customer dining room and a public bar.

Of course there are extra facilities for customers too, including gents and ladies toilets and a kitchen for the pub grub cooking and a cellar and storage room.

Upstairs, there are five bedrooms and a bathroom that comprise a wholly self-contained first floor.

In addition, there's a large three bedroom self-contained annexe ideal as a holiday let back on the ground floor.

These annexe bedrooms can be found off the private owner's kitchen diner room, so could make an ideal extension of an owner's wing of accommodation.

And the good-sized pub on the inside can offer ample parking for customers within an extensive rear yard.

Also outside are a complex of outbuildings and a large paddock to the rear and one side.

The pub then might make an ideal venue for a range of activities such as glamping pods, subject to planning consent, according to the agent selling the pub.

The agent states the pub is an iconic coaching inn dating from the 17th century in a very prominent position on the Denbigh Moors between Denbigh and the A5 at Pentrefoelas.
