Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford says he'd like to welcome Ukrainian refugee into his home

Wales' First Minister Mark Drakeford has said he would welcome a Ukrainian refugee into his home, but he's said some details would need to be worked out first. The Labour politician was asked if he would join the 10,000 other Welsh households which have said they would take part in a scheme to house those fleeing the conflict in Ukraine.

"We're lucky enough to be able to make an offer of that sort. There's some practical things to be worked through and that's what we're doing at the moment," he told LBC.

Asked if he was keeping an open mind to it, he said: "I'd like to do it, we're in a fortunate position where I live that we could do that, there are some practicalities and we need to make sure that if somebody were to come and live in that way they'd get the safety they need and the welcome, well, they'd definitely get the welcome they need."

The Welsh Government has detailed its plans to welcome refugees from the war in Ukraine to Wales. Hundreds of refugees from Ukraine are on their way to Wales and will be put up by the Urdd with the first arriving next weekend. The Welsh Government will act as a super-sponsor under the UK Government’s Homes for Ukraine scheme from March 26.

The Welsh Government will be funding the scheme with as many as 1,000 refugees to follow the first 250, but the eventual number unclear. Refugees will stay in the welcome centre for around three months before moving to families offering to take them in longer term. The process means refugees can apply to come to Wales without having to be named as needing help by members of the public willing to take them in. This is what the Welsh Government has promised so far.
