Pals of murdered prisoner Robert O’Connor paid their respects with his family at his wake yesterday.
The 34-year-old’s body was brought back to his home in Darndale, North Dublin, more than a week after he died from injuries suffered in a brutal assault in Mountjoy. His funeral takes place today at the Church of Our Lady Immaculate at 10am before burial in Fingal Cemetery. It’s believed up to four thugs took part in the attack in a cell on the C2 landing on July 29.
O’Connor, who was serving six-and-a-half years for possession of a semi-automatic pistol in Finglas in October last year, had a severe brain bleed after one of the suspects stamped on his head a number of times. His life support machine was switched off on August 3. A postmortem took place but his body was only released yesterday.

His funeral notice read: “Robert [Robbie], beloved son of Leo and the late Linda and much-loved brother of Wayne and Kylie.” The investigation into his death is continuing as the suspects are held in isolation in Mountjoy.
One line of inquiry is he was attacked on the orders of an assassin over an apparent dispute with his own relative and O’Connor outside prison. Other theories being followed include he was targeted in revenge for ordering an assault or that he may have supplied a gun for a murder outside prison.
