Wait for Aaron Rodgers' trade to New York Jets goes on as Packers talks continue

It is now one month to the day that Aaron Rodgers came out and confirmed that he wanted to be traded to the New York Jets.

The Green Bay Packers and Jets have been in communications from weeks before Rodgers' interview on the Pat McAfee Show, however, no trade has yet to take place on a storyline the has continued to keep the NFL community waiting.

The Jets are looking to Rodgers to answer their long-term quarterback issues - a position at which they have desperately struggled at in recent years, with Zach Wilson and Sam Darnold both struggling after being drafted in the top three.

The Packers will move on to rookie Jordan Love, who they drafted with a first-round pick in 2020, but sat in favour of Rodgers for the last three seasons, two of which saw Rodgers claim the regular season MVP honours.

And with both teams looking to make a deal happen prior to the NFL Draft in order to build their teams around their new quarterbacks, time might be running out.

So why hasn't the trade happened, and what exactly is holding it up?

According to Charles Robinson of Yahoo, Rodgers' retirement stance has the Jets concerned. When Rodgers spoke publicly on his future, he admitted that he strongly considered the idea of retirement - even going so far as to stating he was 90% sure he would walk away from the game.

However, after emerging from his off-season darkness retreat, Rodgers made the decision to continue his career, in the hopes of the two sides completing a trade.

But those retirement contemplations seem to have the Jets worried, in that they hope he does not just play for one season.

Robinson stated that he believes Rodgers' comments on retiring 'scared' Jets owner Woody Johnson.

He said: "It’s at a ridiculous standstill ... depending on what your vantage point is right now. The Packers are holding out for what they want right now and that’s a problem I think with the Jets and more specifically with Jets ownership.

"So where it is, Green Bay is stuck on an asking price of a two [second-round draft pick] this year, a straight-shot one [first-round pick] next year, so no graduation schedule attached to it, and they would be willing to do the 2025…some sort of a draft asset give back if for some reason Aaron Rodgers doesn’t play in '24. And the Jets, and Woody Johnson specifically, are just not going to do it. That’s why this is sort of sitting where it is.

"They sort of had trade parameters worked out, and then when Aaron went on The Pat McAfee Show and said ‘I’m 90% retired’ or ‘I was 90% retired when I went into the darkness retreat,’ I think it scared Woody."
