Wagatha Christie trial to be turned into 'word for word' West End play

The Wagatha Christie trial will be staged "word for word" in a West End play.

Dialogue will be taken from High Court transcripts of the week-long trial in which Rebekah Vardy lost her libel battle against Coleen Rooney.

Producers of Vardy v Rooney: The Wagatha Christie Trial say the case was so "intriguing" that they "couldn't write it" any better themselves.

The play will tell what went on after Coleen set up a sting operation to find out who leaked stories from her Instagram account. A date is yet to be set for the one-off play.

Producer Eleanor Lloyd said: "The way the trial gripped the nation demonstrated how well this story would translate to the stage; the twists and turns were so intriguing you couldn’t write it."

Director Lisa Spirling said she was "thrilled" to "bring this extraordinary script to life".

It comes after Channel 4 revealed the cast for its two-part series Vardy v Rooney: A Courtroom Drama, with This Is England star Chanel Cresswell as Rooney and Game of Thrones ' Natalia Tena as Vardy.

The trial - which had seen Wayne Rooney support his wife Coleen in court - is also set to become a TV series for Channel 4 (Anadolu Agency via Getty Images)

Frost/Nixon actor Michael Sheen will star as Rooney's barrister David Sherborne, while footballer husbands Wayne Rooney and Jamie Vardy, who supported their wives in court, will be played by Dion Lloyd and Marton Nagyszokolyai.

Broadcasters are rumoured to be bidding to secure rights to a film version.
