All the restaurants that are open for takeaways despite the coronavirus lockdown

Restaurants and café chains are slowly reopening their doors to the public after more than eight weeks of lockdown.

McDonald's has been leading the trend, reopening 39 more drive-thru branches this week to the delight of fans across the UK.

Pizza Express is also following suit, maintaining social distancing and 'no contact' guidelines though UberEats and Deliveroo.

Greggs and Subway have also accelerated plans to reopen outlets as they ease back into business amid the loosening of trading restrictions.

Subway is preparing to reopen 600 of its 2,600 stores across the UK and Ireland. Greggs has reopened a handful of shops in north-east England.

Burger King, KFC, Nando’s, Starbucks and Pret a Manger are also reopening stores through phased programmes offering takeaway and delivery only. The Five Guys burger chain has opened 47 of its 104 UK restaurants.

Customers will not be able to dine in, and workers will be fully protected with PPE, such as masks and gloves.

So what chains are open over the Bank Holiday weekend? We take a look.

Pizza Express is to reopen 13 London restaurants for delivery only in the next 10 days as it tests the water for a national return to business.

Zoe Bowley, the managing director of Pizza Express for the UK and Ireland, said the casual dining chain would begin with an edited menu from restaurants in “London villages”, including Balham, Fulham and Notting Hill, where it had high demand.

"We will do this to test and learn, and then it will enable us to programme the rollout and ultimately pave the way for dine in the future," Bowley told the industry newsletter Propel.

"There has been huge rigour around all the right safety protocols so our teams feel comfortable, and then we can really demonstrate to customers how we are looking after the teams and ensure they trust the quality of the pizza they receive."

Wagamama has now reopened 24 restaurants, with plans for the next 20 to follow on May 28.

By the end of June there will be 67 restaurants serving the public again.

The move follows a successful trial at four branches - Peckham, Hackney, Bow and Leeds - which has been running since April 30.

Wagamama chief executive Emma Woods said: "Over the past couple of months our focus has been on creating a safe working environment for our team members and our two-week trial has enabled our teams to return to work safely.

"The next logical step for us is to open additional sites throughout the UK, this will still very much form a test and learn approach for the business.

"The response of our return has been extremely positive and we look forward to our guests being able to get their Wagamama fix."

You'll be able to place orders on Deliveroo, Just Eat or UberEats for delivery - depending on your location.

You can also order food for takeaway through the Wagamama website.

Most of the reopened branches will be restaurant sites, although kitchen-only establishments are included too.

Burger King UK has reopened 12 restaurants across England and Scotland so far, seven for delivery and one for drive-through customers.

Restaurants will be open from midday to 11pm, and customers will be able to place their orders via Deliveroo and Just Eat.

The branches are operating with a restricted menu for now, but Burger King has assured customers that the Chicken Royale, Bacon Double Cheeseburger and Whopper will all be available to order.

In a statement, chief executive, Alasdair Murdoch said the chain is aiming to open at least 350 of its restaurants by the end of June.

He said a scaled-back menu would allow staff to socially distance while making the food, with the arrangements being put into place for drive-through restaurants and with trials set to start on how to re-open high street walk-in locations.

A string of new safety measures are being enforced at the reopened branches to protect employees, such as masks and gloves for all workers, and offering training on how to run a hygienic kitchen whilst still maintaining social distancing rules.

    KFC

KFC has reopened 500 branches across the UK, following in the footsteps of rivals McDonald's, Subway and Burger King.

The chain has been slowly reopening restaurants across the UK for either home delivery, drive-thru or click and collect over the past fortnight.

However, dining areas remain closed, as per Government guidelines on how hospitality businesses can operate during the coronavirus pandemic.

KFC said its home delivery options will be available through Deliveroo, Just Eat and UberEats.

Bear in mind that you'll need to pay a delivery fee on top of your food order, depending on how far away you are from your nearest restaurant.

High street coffee chain Costa has reopened 46 more branches, following a trial across the UK earlier this month.

The coffee retailer said 79 stores are now open for takeaways, including several in London, Edinburgh and Manchester.

Jill McDonald, chief executive of Costa, said stores will operate a different look and feel, with customers queueing two meters apart and just a handful allowed in each branch at a time.

The chain has introduced a number of changes to protect its staff and customers, including introducing hand sanitiser stations and perspex screens for customers.

Staff will also be wearing masks and other personal protective equipment.

Costa will only accept contactless payment and won’t be able to accept physical Coffee Club cards, although customers can still collect and redeem loyalty points using the Costa app.

The coffee chain also has a limited menu on offer and will not be accepting reusable cups.

The chain said it has slowly started to reopen restaurants to the public, offering a delivery service via Deliveroo, with more hoping to open in the coming weeks.

The restaurants will operate behind closed doors exclusively for delivery, while the menu will be reduced to help the team maintain social distancing in the kitchen and food prep areas.

As part of its phased reopenings, Pret has introduced a range of safety measures for both customers and staff.

Each shop has been fitted with Perspex screens at the tills, while restrictions are also in place on the number of customers allowed in the stores.

Members of staff in branches due to reopen have undergone a "thorough interview to ensure that they are fit to return to work", Pret said, while those living with anyone who is vulnerable will not be permitted to return.
