WA Supercars return excites Winterbottom

Supercars veteran Mark Winterbottom cannot predict what will unfold when the championship returns to Western Australia this weekend - and that excites him.

Winterbottom has more race wins at Wanneroo Raceway than any other driver in the current field with seven, but is not sure what awaits in Perth's northern suburbs given Supercars haven't raced there 2019.

The 40-year-old was the last driver to win at the track in 2016 before Scott McLaughlin and DJR Team Penske dominated the past three events with McLaughlin winning five of the past six races in WA and former teammate Fabian Coulthard the other.

Championship leader Shane Van Gisbergen has also never won a race in Perth, giving Winterbottom and the rest of the field hope that they can overshadow the Red Bull Ampol Racing star.

"The unbeatable guy at some places is winless at a track that we're coming up to. We'll see if those stats stay the same," Winterbottom told AAP.

"It was dominated by McLaughlin back there in '19 and Tickford has been strong there in the past but who knows?

"You go there and every year's different. I don't think it's purely a Mustang track.

"Whoever's quick is going to win this weekend and could be anyone."

Winterbottom heads west 11th on the standings and having endured a frustrating weekend at the Australian Grand Prix earlier this month where his Team 18 Holden's good pace didn't translate into results.

Still searching for a first podium finish in his fourth year with the Charlie Schwerkolt-owned team, Winterbottom feels a family-focused Easter break has him re-energised at one of his favourite circuits.

"There's been a few deep and meaningful chats to get this car back up the front," he said.

"From a work point of view it's been busy but then over Easter, we got away and spent time with the family.

"It's been a nice little refresh because the grand prix was mentally pretty draining.

"We had four races that could have been, that just didn't go our way and that takes a bit of an emotional battering on you.

"You address it, which is good. You don't hide behind it, address it, make it better, and then have family time to get your mind fully away from it and then counting down the sleeps to get there.

"Ready to rock and roll."
