WA Police charge man over Mandurah boat crash that killed Kylie Bazzo, Deborah Burdon

A 47-year-old man has been charged over the death of his wife and another woman, who were killed in a boat crash south of Perth.

A boat carrying four people crashed into a red channel marker in the Mandurah Estuary on the night of January 21.

The mother of West Coast Eagles' Rhett Bazzo, 52-year-old Kylie Bazzo, and 54-year-old Debbie Burdon, died after the crash.

Ms Burdon's husband, John Burdon, who was also injured in the boat crash, has been charged with two counts of manslaughter.

The 47-year-old, who is believed to have been skippering the boat, was granted bail after making a brief appearance at the Mandurah Magistrates Court.

Mr Burdon was supported by one crutch and could be seen limping as he left court.

He was granted bail with several conditions, including a $100,000 surety and a $100,000 personal undertaking.

He is next due in court on February 22.

Community tributes after tragedy

There was an outpouring of community support after the boat crash, with many expressing condolences to the families of the women who died.

Ms Bazzo, whose body was found in the estuary by water police the night after the crash, was remembered as a trailblazer for women in football.

Following her death, the West Coast Eagles released a statement saying the club was "devastated" by her death.

She was also remembered as a "top-shelf mother" who had done a "brilliant" job raising her two children.

Her 19-year-old son Rhett Bazzo was drafted with pick 37 in the 2021 AFL  draft and played nine games last year in his first season with the club.

He and his sister Kameron lost their father, Swan Districts great Steve Bazzo, to cancer in 2015.

Kylie Bazzo was appointed chief executive of the Peel Thunder Football Club in 2000, making her the first-ever female chief executive in the West Australian Football League.
